Premier League round up

Everton's slim hopes of Europa League football are over after a 0-0 draw at Stoke and there were wins for Portsmouth and Burnley elsewhere.

Birmingham City 2-1 Burnley

Portsmouth 3-1 Wolverhampton

Stoke City 0-0 Everton

In the remaining games in the Premier League this afternoon, there were wins for Portsmouth and Birmingham City while Stoke City and Everton played out a goalless draw at the Brittania stadium.

Birmingham remain on course for their highest ever finish in the top division after defeating Burnley in the early kick off at St. Andrews. An own goal from Burnley keeper Brian Jensen and a goal for Chucho Benitez gave the hosts a two goal lead but Steven Thompson grabbed a late consolation for Brian Laws’ side.

All of Birmingham’s wins this season have been by a margin of a single goal, a statistic that looked in doubt until Thompson’s late intervention.

Already relegated Portsmouth put on a fine display at Fratton Park ahead of their FA Cup final appearance in a fortnight’s time, comfortably defeating Mick McCarthy’s Wolves side.

Michael Brown, John Utaka and Aruna Dindane scored the goals for Pompey with Irish international Kevin Doyle netting the only goal for the Foxes.

At the Brittania, Phil Jagielka had a goal controversially ruled out in a scoreless draw with Stoke City. Jagielka thought he had given the Toffees the lead with a 74th minute header, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Rory Delap missed a glaring opportunity for Tony Pulis’ side in an otherwise dull encounter and the result has put paid to the slim hopes Everton had of qualifying for next season’s Europa League.
