Rangers can’t be saved, according to club director

Rangers are set to go out of business according to one of the club’s directors, as he called liquidation “inevitable”.

We all know Rangers are in deep trouble. With the club in administration and in the process of trying to cut costs to keep their head above water the Glasgow giants are fighting for their lives.

But we always assume that football clubs, especially really big football clubs, will survive and battle on until the debts are finally sorted out.

However it seems that one man on the Rangers board, Dave King, is none too positive about the situation. King is the last surviving member of the board from the David Murray era, the man in charge until Craig Whyte took over at Ibrox last year.

In a very long statement, King stated his belief that the club would have to go bust and start all over again.

He said: "It grieves me to state that it seems inevitable that the footballing institution will survive but the company won't.

"This will entail many hurdles (that will be overcome) including 'Rangers (2012) Ltd' having to reapply for membership of the SFA (Scottish Football Association) etc. It is a sad point to have reached, but if managed sensibly, it can result in Rangers returning to its former glory as a football club in the shortest time possible.”

We still find it hard to believe that Rangers would disappear from the top flight of Scottish football, leaving Celtic as an enormous fish in a tiny pond. Some argue that even if they do go bust they will be allowed straight into the SPL rather than the bottom of Scottish football so as to keep the Old Firm rivalry going but that would require the consent of the other SPL clubs, not just Celtic.

But if one of the board that is trying to salvage the club from its massive debts and tax bill think it’s game over then who are we to argue.

We better enjoy the next few Old Firm games, they may well be the last for a very long time.
