The Uruguay squad saw 39kg of dulce de leche confiscated on their way into Brazil.

It won’t surprise you to know that we first came across this story in the Daily Mail, who claim that the reason Uruguay performed so badly in their opening World Cup game against Costa Rica was down to the confiscation of their favourite caramel spread.

Dulce de leche is very popular in the South American country and Uruguay were known to bring plenty with them to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they finished third.

The caramel paste is made by cooking milk with sugar, baking powder and vanilla extract. However, because the dulce de leche is made with milk, the dulce de leche needed some sanitary documentation.

Some fans, who clearly aren’t close friends with reality or intelligence, claim that Diego Forlan, Diego Godin et al lost 3-1 to Costa Rica because of an absent sugar buzz.

Everyone else thinks they were just rubbish on the day.
