Robin van Persie denies Nazi salute goal celebration accusations

Arsenal star Robin van Persie has taken to Twitter in order to defuse ridiculous accusations that he made a Nazi salute while celebrating at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

After achieving a brace before his eventual hat-trick and taking giving Arsenal a 4-3 lead in their 5-3 away victory over Chelsea, the Dutch striker raises his arm to his shoulder and pushed it forward while running towards the Gunners faithful. Take a look below:

Some took the celebration as a fascist gesture, an allegation which the in-form forward has quickly sought to dismiss.

"It has been brought to my attention of some ridiculous allegations concerning my celebration of one of my goals yesterday," began Van Persie in a series of tweets from his official Twitter account last night.

"It is totally ludicrous to suggest that my action of brushing my shoulder and pointing to my fans could be construed as anything else but of a showing of joy and celebration.

"To suggest this meant anything to the contrary is insulting and absolutely absurd as nothing else came into my mind."

As Twitter user @ASCFR later pointed out on the micro-blogging site, if there's anyone that should be facing Nazi accusations, it's centre-half Laurent Koscielny and his ill-judged microphone placement (see below).
