Our cultured Poet-President was content to mix with the great unwashed on Valentine’s Night, apparently, taking his other half to the cinema multiplex at Liffey Valley Centre.
No private screenings or secretive back-door cloak-and-dagger entries for our recently elected head of state.
Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina were spotted attending the screening of Steven Spielberg’s World War I flick, War Horse, at the Vue cinema last Tuesday night, reported Miriam Lord in her Irish Times column on Saturday.
The first couple were chaperoned by a couple of burly security guards, but apart from that there were no airs or graces about them as they settled into their multiplex surroundings.
And they were holding hands too. It was Valentine’s night, but you get the feeling Michael D is an all-year round holding-hands type of guy.
Fair play to him, we say.
