While we were licking our lips at the prospect of a new ‘Dream League’, it appears that it was a hoax created by a French website.
By Declan Whooley
The figures bandied about for the DFL were nothing short of ridiculous, but the satirical website Les Cahiers du Football is taking credit for fabricating the entire story.
While there seems to be no end to the riches of some of the oil-rich billionaires in the Gulf region, the initial report said that the DFL was looking to attract the top 24 clubs in the world to compete in a new competition. With figures of £175 million mentioned as appearance fees, we don’t think the clubs would have needed too much encouraging.
Considering that Chelsea received £47 million for last season’s Champions League success, the money involved for the DFL would have put that competition into serious doubt.
Alas, it was all a figment of the French website’s imagination, though many were duped by the story, including The Times who quoted a 'close source' to confirm the proposals were in the pipeline.
The good old 'close source' line. Turns out not very close at all.
