Former Green Party TD Paul Gogarty has asked Twitter users to decide which of the five songs he has recorded should be his first single.
By Clare Cullen
Yes, that's right, Paul Gogarty, best known for telling Deputy Emmet Stagg in the Dáil to go f*ck himself, and more recently, for attacking critics on Twitter. He's now branching into the music business and wants everyone involved in the process.
His musical name is GOGOWOWWOW (no, we're not joking) and his Soundcloud bio warns Lady GAGA to "move over". Interestingly, it also describes him as "a former politician with a track record of achievement in Education", important and all as that sort of record is, in the music business.
Surprisingly enough, this new venture is not, as we first suspected, a very clever twitter-jack. Even on his official TD website, the move into the music business is the latest blog post. On his Twitter, he describes the song "Wishing On A Photograph" as "Sweet honey centre with crunchy shell. 157 secs (sic) of bliss." I don't know about you, but that makes us want to eat it, not listen to it.
Our favourite thing about the whole scenario is that his second most recent blog post is your typical, opposition-bashing-the-government type blog post. He obviously realised in the last month that moving into music would still be a better career decision than staying in the Green Party.
There are five songs on his Soundcloud and 3 hours ago, he offered €100 to the person who picked his next single, via a draw once he received 50 tweets. The jury's still out on whether asking a nation who ceremoniously threw you out of government to steer your next venture is the mark of a brave man, or an incredibly stupid one.
Due to a misunderstanding on Twitter, people were suggesting cover songs for Paul to sink his teeth into. David Cochrane suggested Ceelo's 'F*ck You' while another Twitter user suggested 'I'm an Asshole" by Dennis O' Leary. Personally, we would have liked to see him have a bash of 'I'm A Man' by the Black Strobes (from the 'RocknRolla' soundtrack), if only for the comedy factor.
We have to admit, his songs are not the worst songs we've ever heard. Nicki Minaj does still exist, after all. However, we're sure that for now, GAGA's throne is pretty safe. Daniel O' Donnell, on the other hand, might be another story.
You can listen to his songs here and vote for your favourite. Many more than 50 people have sent him 'helpful' suggestions, although not many relate to picking his next single.
