We knew Tokyo is one of the most crowded cities in the world, we had no idea that a small apartment cost so much. And by small, we mean very small indeed.
The word apartment really doesn’t do justice when you see the living space available to an occupant, with one person barely having enough room to stretch out.
Known locally as geki-sema, or share houses to those of us not familiar with the Japanese language, they still cost up to €500 in some cases and are popular with students and young professionals looking to get by.

People can just about get their possessions in as well, though you wouldn’t want to have much with you. The glorified cubicles are stacked on top of each other, have no windows and little ventilation. It goes without saying they are not suitable for those anyway claustrophobic.
Makes you a little more appreciative of what you have.
