A group of robbers are on the lamb after fleecing €850 worth of wool from a Sligo sheep farmer.

Gabriel Gilmartin, who is also president of the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association, had sheared his way through 188 animals and stored away the resultant 564kg of wool when the bandits swooped.

The sheep hit the fan when Gilmartin discovered the theft some time later.

“I was very annoyed about it,” he told The Irish Sun, failing to appreciate the pun goldmine his story would present to journalists.

“You used to be able to leave anything lying about your farm but not anymore,” said Gilmartin of a by-gone era. “High prices in wool have led to increased reports of supplies being stolen.”
