Tottenham Hotspur set to seal surprising striker deal

Tottenham Hotspur appear set to seal the most surprising deal of the January transfer deadline day - a swoop for Everton's Louis Saha.

Though Spurs boss Harry Redknapp had stated last month that if the club were to make a January signing, "Let's make one big signing... that would send out a message", a move for Saha is perhaps not what the club's fans had in mind. The 33-year-old Frenchman has scored just once in 18 league appearances this season.

Spurs had reportedly failed in their attempts to sign Loic Remy of Olympique Marseille and Werder Bremen veteran Claudio Pizarro this month, though a move for Saha looks feasible following Nikica Jelavic's expected move from Rangers to Everton this afternoon.

According to Phil McNulty of the BBC's Twitter page, however, the Saha deal is nearly done. "Louis Saha from Everton to Spurs now looking a done deal. Really intriguing move that," he tweeted earlier today.

The Daily Mail also believe that the deal itself could be just for a loan term, while reports are surfacing that Spurs midfielder Steven Pienaar could be heading in the opposite direction as Saha in order to rejoin his former club.

As of this writing, the Premier League striker merry-go-round is exceptionally confusing. Nikica Jelavic is having a medical at Everton, Saha or Wigan's Hugo Rodallega could be heading to Spurs, Bobby Zamora may be off to QPR and WBA's Peter Odemwingie is a target for Fulham. Expect 90 per cent of that sentence to be completely out of date within an hour or so.
