Well that didn’t last long.

Substitutes are often encouraged to make their presence felt as quickly as possible after their introduction, but Dinamo Zagreb’s Ante Rukavina interpreted that line too literally for his own good during a Champions League qualifier against Austria Vienna last night.

Rukavina came on in the second half of Zagreb’s 2-0 defeat but lasted only 30 seconds after being given his marching orders for a high tackle on Kaja Rogulj, which was his first contribution to the action.

Rukavina might consider himself a little hard done by as it was an entirely accidental collision but if Xabi Alonso was watching at least he’ll have seen that Howard Webb has learnt his lesson…
