Ask a perfectly acceptable question… and get a ridiculously defensive answer. Australia’s Will Genia could do with lightening up just a bit.
The Wallaby captain had to be withdrawn during what was a hard-earned 26-19 victory over the Springboks in the Rugby Championship yesterday and by the time he faced up for the post-match interview, he was on crutches with a huge ice-pack around his injured knee.
We understand that emotions may have been running high in the immediate aftermath of the match, but surely there was no need for Genia to tear into Rod Kafer of Fox Sports for suggesting that it wasn’t a good night for him personally but a good one for the team overall.
Genia took it as a slight against his own display and started into a rant about it not being about the individuals before looking just a little embarrassed when Kafer explained that he meant that it was a bad night for Genia because of his injury and not because of a poor personal performance.
In fairness to Genia, he apologised when he realised what Kafer had meant in the first place, but Kafer will think twice before questioning the scrum-half again.
Prickly and awkward though it was, it still beats a Declan Kidney interview any day of the week.
