We know that the rivalry between the two teams runs deep but there is absolutely no excuse for what Josip Šimunić did to Miralem Sulejmani last night.
Players sometimes do things out of character in the heat of the moment and the chances of that happening are increased when to bitter rivals go head to head, as was the case when Serbia and Croatia clashed in Belgrade last night.
The game finished 1-1 and ended Serbia’s hopes of World Cup qualification but it will be remembered for a quite shocking challenge by Croatian defender Josip Šimunić on Miralem Sulejmani with ten minutes left.
Serbia had already lost Nemanja Matic to a second yellow card when Šimunić, making no attempt whatsoever to win the ball, scythed Sulejmani with a tackle that was not just cynical but very dangerous; thankfully Sulejmani got up and was able to finish out the game afterwards.
Shocking stuff.
