For every Irish footballer who successfully pursues a career in professional football in the UK, there are hundreds more who travel across the water as teenagers and miss out on their dream of making it to the top.

The life of a professional footballer comes with many perks but it can be unbelievably tough for the many who don’t quite make it, and what happens on the way is a subject explored in ‘Football Scholars’, a four-part series that will air on Setanta Ireland next Monday evening.

Football Scholars – Tough Love from Loosehorse on Vimeo.

Narrated by Paul McGrath, who has first-hand experience having moved to Manchester United from St. Patrick’s Athletic in his youth, the documentary was produced by Loosehorse, written by Ger Gilroy and directed by Ross Bartley and follows a number of budding Irish footballers attempting to make the grade.

With unique behind the scenes access to Sunderland and Burnley, Football Scholars looks set to offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of professional football, as it does in the teaser clip above, where Burnley coach Terry Pashley dishes out some tough love to his charges.

Football Scholars starts on Setanta Ireland on Monday 3rd March at 7pm
