Players often look to blame the surface as an excuse for a shocking penalty, but we have a fair bit of sympathy for Edin Dzeko in this case.

Players often look to blame the surface as an excuse for a shocking penalty, but we have a fair bit of sympathy for Edin Dzeko in this case.

Dzeko stepped up to the spot during the Barclays Asia Trophy match between Manchester City and Sunderland on a bog of a pitch in terrible conditions in Hong Kong today, looking to beat Irish international Kieren Westwood for what would have been his and City’s second goal of the night.

Instead, he sent the ball high, wide and anything but handsome with an effort that was greeted with the inevitable ironic cheers from the Sunderland supporters present.

Give it about half an hour and you can expect a similar video to the hardly original but still hilarious efforts which have greeted similarly awful penalty misses from the likes of Charlie Adam and Sergio Ramos in the past.
