Highly unnecessary? Yes. Highly entertaining? Abso-bloody-lutely.
Unless you’re a Stoke City fan or it’s the last minute and things are getting desperate, throw-ins are never anything to get excited about.
Unless, that it is, someone on the team you support is capable of executing a textbook back-flip throw-in, which nearly always seems to generate extra distance as well as looking extremely cool in the process.
In Steinthor Thorsteinsson – don’t say you’ve never heard of him – Norwegian side Sandnes have just that guy as he pulled off one of the best back-flip throw-ins you’ll ever see in his side’s clash with Lillestrom lately.
Unfortunately for him, only the Lillestrom ‘keeper seemed to be on the same wavelength as he produced a fairly spectacular dive to prevent a Sandnes player from getting a head on it and delivering the reward that the throw-in deserved.
Come down off that throne Rory Delap, there’s a new king of the throw-in; expect a Stoke City bid as soon as the transfer window re-opens.
