HBO’s Last Week Tonight has been producing some quality stuff but this attack on FIFA is the best yet.
Since the end of April, former Daily Show regular and stand-in host when Jon Stewart was away, John Oliver, has had his own show on HBO called Last Week Tonight.
It is similar enough in style to the Daily Show but with a weekly remit they can tackle bigger stories, or perhaps more obscure ones to American eyes, and the many faults of FIFA came under their glare on Sunday night.
While most of the stuff discussed is familiar to European eyes and ears it is still very well put together. FIFA’s many restrictive practices on host countries, the huge pile of cash they sit on and the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar all get examined here.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wonder how Sepp Blatter is still in the gig.
