During a debate in the Seanad yesterday, the Fianna Fáil Senator Terry Leyden got a little distracted and went on to tell everyone that, “Hitler and Mussolini were good Christians… allegedly”.

There’s been a lot of talk in Irish politics as to whether or not the Seanad should be abolished and yesterday, during a debate on the matter, one Senator had something to say that was simply jaw dropping.

Senator Terry Leyden from Co. Roscommon went off on a bit of a tangent while discussing the Thirty-Second Amendment of the Constitution, aka. the abolition of the Seanad, when he said, “The Pope was very influential at the time, but not so influential with Mussolini or Adolf Hitler, both good Christians… allegedly”.

Unsurprisingly, Senator Leyden tries to dig himself back out of the hole but it’s too late at that stage.

It’s just another moment in Irish politics when you have to wonder, what was he thinking? Keep a close eye on the lad sitting directly behind Senator Leyden. He looks like he’s dying to laugh out of pure amazement… we wouldn’t blame him.
