Chelsea 1-1 Bayern Munich (after extra-time, Chelsea win 4-3 on penalties)
What is it about Chelsea in the Champions League that makes Gary Neville lose his head and emit sounds usually only heard in the bedroom?
On an amazing night in Munich, the former Manchester United defender lost the run of himself on a few occasions, not least after Didier Drogba’s winning penalty, when he launched into a bizarre ramble about FIFA, UEFA, the heavens and the stars.
That was nothing compared to his squeaky reaction after Drogba’s equaliser in the dying minutes of normal time, however, although viewers will be familiar with the sound having heard it when Fernando Torres scored against Barcelona in the Nou Camp in the semi-final.
In fairness to Neville, there did seem to be a hint of destiny about Chelsea’s triumph as everything seemed to go their way on the night. Having been battered repeatedly until Thomas Muller opened the scoring eight minutes from time, Chelsea looked down and out until Drogba’s brilliant equaliser from their first corner of the game with two minutes left.
Drogba turned villain in the first half of extra time when he gave away a penalty after clumsily fouling Franck Ribery, but not for the first time this season, former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben couldn’t deliver when it mattered and Petr Cech saved to keep the Blues in the hunt.
Chelsea also fell behind during the penalty shoot-out when Juan Mata’s tame penalty was saved by Manuel Neuer, but Cech again stepped up to save from Ivica Olic before Bastian Schweinsteiger hit the post with Bayern’s fifth penalty.
That set the stage for Drogba to win it with possibly his last ever kick of a ball for Chelsea and as he has done so often on the big occasion in the past, the Ivorian produced the goods.
Chelsea will no doubt enjoy the celebrations, but whether they'll get as excited as Neville did remains to be seen.
