Video: in case you missed it, Gareth Bale scored on his Real Madrid debut last night

It wasn’t a 40-yard screamer or a stunning individual effort, but a debut goal is a debut goal after all.

It wasn’t a 40-yard screamer or a stunning individual effort, but a debut goal is a debut goal after all.

After one of the most talked about transfers in football, Gareth Bale will be eager to prove that he can live up to all the hype and he didn’t get off to a bad start with a goal on his Real Madrid debut against Villarreal last night.

Having fallen behind to the hosts at the El Madrigal, Bale restored parity to proceedings by sliding in to connect with a cross from Daniel Carvajal and steer the ball into the net. And with his right foot too.

Real eventually drew 2-2 with Cristiano Ronaldo grabbing the second goal of the night for the visitors and any suggestion that Bale might eclipse CR7 as the main man at the Bernabeu was put to bed today with news of a bumper new contract for the former Man United man that will net him approximately €17 million a year and will be officially announced later today.

Still, not a bad start for Bale all the same and in case you’re wondering, yes, he has brought that slightly annoying heart-shaped celebration ™ to Spain with him.
