Critics are divided over the motivational effects of hearing your national anthem before a game, but surely hearing the wrong one can’t help at all.
Lining up awaiting to hear their national anthem before a basketball match recently, the Spanish national side were bemused to hear the Portuguese national anthem ring out instead.
The players could have been forgiven for reacting a tad more angrily than they did – entirely different circumstances maybe, but could you imagine how we’d react if the English national anthem was played – but instead the majority of them started bursting out laughing at what was a farcical situation.
Of course, had Eamon Dunphy been doing the analysis of the game, he probably would have said that the collective laughter of the Spanish side was a reflection of their complete focus ahead of the match.
How the person responsible for the cock-up got it wrong we have no idea, but at least what could have been an international incident passed without much fuss.
