Video: Michael Owen is actually quite funny and not at all boring in this new BT Sport ad

The prospect of Michael Owen as co-commentator during BT Sport’s live Premier League coverage hasn’t exactly got pulses racing amongst football fans, but he could surprise a few people if this ad is anything to go by.

The prospect of Michael Owen as co-commentator during BT Sport’s live Premier League coverage hasn’t exactly got pulses racing amongst football fans, but he could surprise a few people if this ad is anything to go by.

Owen is one of a number of high-profile figures who’ve been snapped up by BT as they attempt to muscle in on Sky’s domination of Premier League coverage, but having witnessed his rather dull performances on the Match of the Day couch to date, expectations amongst football fans aren’t exactly sky-high.

Perhaps aware of his reputation, BT sought to show a more enthusiastic side to Owen’s personality in a new promotional ad for the station ahead of the new season, showing Owen reaching almost Brazilian commentator levels of excitement when commentating on some of his most famous goals in the past.

The chances of Owen bringing a similar level of enthusiasm when the real stuff gets underway could be slim and cynics will say that he was so excited because he was actually commentating on himself.

But credit where it’s due, this is a more than decent performance from the former England man and who knows, after attending a punditry ‘boot camp’ in recent weeks, maybe he’ll be rivalling former team-mate Gary Neville in the popularity stakes as the season goes on.
