The season hasn’t even started properly yet and we already have a contender for miss of the year that will be hard to beat. Petr Jiracek, come on down.

Czech Republic and Hungary drew 1-1 in Budapest in one of the many international friendlies played last night but the visitors could well have won were it not for one of the worst misses you’ll see for a long, long time.

While it must have been a horrendous experience for Petr Jiracek to conspire to miss an open goal from two yards out, it was pretty funny for everyone else as not only did he miss the goal, he sent the ball wildly off target, so far in fact that it nearly hit the corner flag. Look closely and you’ll see a few officials on the bench having a good chuckle at it immediately afterwards.

The worst thing about the miss, however, was that a fantastic piece of skill by his teammate on the edge of the box to create the chance went unrewarded; he’ll just have to make sure a more reliable finisher gets on the end of these opportunities in future.
