Roy Carroll is widely known as the man behind the most unfortunate goalkeeping blunder of all time, but he’s just after writing himself into the history books for all the right reasons.
The former fumbling Manchester United goalkeeper saved a penalty with his very first touch as an Olympiacos player after coming on as a substitute when first choice netminder Balázs Megyeri was sent off after conceding a penalty late on against Rubin Kazan.
If that wasn’t enough to ensure cult status for Carroll amongst the Olympiacos faithful, the Greek side went on to win the game 1-0, giving them a vital aggregate lead heading into the second leg in Athens on Thursday week.
We don’t have the exact statistics to hand, but we’re pretty sure that there are not many goalkeepers who have saved a penalty with their first touch for their new club.
As a result, Carroll is bound to remembered for generations in a positive light, even though it will be hard to disassociate him from his hilarious attempt to save a long-range effort from Spurs’ Pedro Mendes at Old Trafford years ago (see video below).
Roy has copped enough flak for that incident - particularly because the goal was never awarded - but he deserves plenty of credit in this case. Check out his heroics for yourself in the video above.
