Deceiving the ‘keeper and the opposition defence is one way to score directly from a free-kick and a German lower league team did just that in brilliant style with a cleverly crafted routine at the weekend.
The problem with staging an elaborate free-kick routine in an attempt to put off the opposition is that everything has to go right for a team to pull it off and that when they go wrong, they tend to do in hilariously disastrous fashion.
When you get everything right, however, it looks like masterful, as was the case with the effort above from German fourth division side Rot Weiss-Essen against Wattenscheid 09 at the weekend.
Six players in total were involved but after his teammates had elaborately fooled the opposition defence and ‘keeper it was left to Benedikt Koep to curl home a beauty into the top corner for an equaliser in a 2-2 draw and ensure that all the best-laid plans didn’t go to waste.
It’s undoubtedly a worthy addition to the list of the best free-kick routines ever seen in football and although the free-kick routine below was far less successful, it still remains our all-time favourite…
