It takes a lot for us to be surprised at what goes on in South American football, but last night’s Copa Sudamericana final was possibly more mental than anything that has gone before.
Relations between Tigre and Sao Paolo were fraught to say the least following the first leg last week and things only got worse last night.
Tigre hit out at the intimidation tactics of the home side, claiming that stones were pelted at the team bus, that they were prevented from warming up on the pitch before the game and even worse, that guns were pulled on their players. Jeez.
There was a brawl between the sides at half-time and Tigre refused to come out for the second half, with Sao Paolo declared winners by default having been ahead 2-0 at the time thanks to goals from Osvaldo and the PSG bound Lucas Moura in his last game for the club.
The video above doesn’t feature any guns being pulled, but it gives you an idea of the mayhem that ensued. Like we said, mental.
