Diego Maradona. Do we have to say more?
Of course we do because JOE has never taken short-cuts when it comes to writing articles on some of our most beloved football icons. Today marks the 38th anniversary of arguably the greatest player of all-time’s professional debut with Argentinos Juniors.
The sporting journey of Argentina’s ’86 talismanic World Cup winning captain began at La Paternal in the barrio district of Buenos Aires as Maradona made his debut, losing 1-0 to Talleres, on October 20, 1976.
The future Barcelona and Napoli icon was sprung from the bench at half-time to replace teammate Giacobetti but he was unable to salvage a draw.
Take a look at this footage and keep an eye out for a fleeting glimpse of a talented young player wearing the number 16 red and white diagonal shirt.
We think it’s incredibly fitting that the stadium is now named after him.
