It was a bitter pill to swallow for Leinster fans yesterday who were stunned by a last gasp Northampton try that put the game to bed
After putting in one of their best performances in a long time last week to absolutely hammer Norhtampton, the fans at the Aviva yesterday were probably planning on making the trip to the game, watching a routine win and heading out for the night, but Northampton more than did enough to exact a little bit of revenge on the Boys in Blue yesterday.
After a disappointing first half in which their only score came from the boot of Ian Madigan, Leinster tried to push on in the second, but only had further points from penalty kicks to show for their efforts. As the clock ticked toward the end, it looked as though they were going to find some way to pull a result out of the bag as they poured the pressure on Northampton on the try line, but it wasn’t to be.
As they went through phase after phase trying to find a gap to exploit, Jamie Heaslip unexpectedly dropped the ball and was harshly punished for his mistake by Jamie Elliot, who reacted first to run the length of the pitch to score. As you can see from the images above, the Leinster lads were pretty devastated about the loss.
Leinster still sit on top of their pool in the Heineken Cup, but they will surely be wondering today how they ended up on the wrong end of the scoreline last night.
