Children of the 80s will be glad to know that Catchphrase is on the way back, which gives us the opportunity to recycle one of the most hilarious moments in television history.
The game show, which ran from 1986 until 2002, is being revived by ITV bosses after a successful pilot and will be hosted by Britain’s Got Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern, who has the unenviable task of trying to fill the shoes of the unmistakeable Northern Irishman Roy Walker.
Mulhern will front a series of eight 45-minute episodes that will run on ITV 1 and will follow the same well-worn format where contestants attempt to guess well-known catchphrases as depicted in animations, although it will be a little more digitally enhanced than it was in its heyday, of course.
Whether it can live up to the original remains to be seen, not so much in terms of quality but in terms of the unintended hilarity provided by so many episodes, particularly the one where Mr. Chips – who, you’ll be glad to know, will also be returning – appeared to be, well, pleasuring himself.
If you can’t remember it or even if you can but just want to have another look, check it out in the video above. You’ll be glad you did. Not half as glad as Mr. Chips, mind, but glad all the same.
