Video: Watching a ref fall comically fall over a player while running backwards never gets old

All this needs now is some Benny Hill music and it’s as close to perfection as you’re going to get.

All this needs now is some Benny Hill music and it’s as close to perfection as you’re going to get.

Putting up with abuse from players on the pitch and from managers off it, facing constant scrutiny in the media whenever they get a decision wrong; referees have a pretty tough life as it is.

And that’s before having to deal with players unintentionally acting as human obstacles on the pitch and causing a great deal of embarrassment to those whistle-blowers not watching their every step, as was the case with referee Clos Gomez and Atletico Madrid’s Josuha Guilavogui last night.

The old bend over and try and topple a guy running backwards trick is nearly as old as time itself at this stage, but Guilavogui wasn’t doing it on purpose during Atletico’s Copa del Rey clash with Villarreal last night, even though he couldn’t have executed any better if he tried.

Textbook.
