This is some statement by the Champions.

Liverpool were probably the better side in the opening half but not a whole lot had happened at the Etihad before Stevan Jovetic broke the deadlock just before the break.

Alberto Moreno hesitated slightly in the area and it was to cost him dearly as Jovetic pounced and fired powerfully past Simon Mignolet to give the hosts the lead…

Ten minutes after half-time, the Montenegrin doubled his and City’s tally by getting on the end of an incisive City move and although the finish wasn’t sweetly struck, Jovetic did what he had to and put City in the driving seat…

As if to illustrate the depth of quality in their squad, Manuel Pellegrini introduced Sergio Aguero for Edin Dzeko midway through the second half and the Argentinean made an instant impact after a gorgeous pass by fellow replacement Jevus Navas.

It wasn’t just Man City’s subs making an impact as Rickie Lambert scored his first goal for his new club (or was it a Zabaleta OG?) with a rather messy finish from a lovely outside of the boot cross from the right by Daniel Sturridge.
