Young rugby star Johnny Holland may be forced to retire at 24

Carl Kinsella

The career of young Munster outhalf Johnny Holland could be curtailed far too early as a result of an ongoing quad injury.

The 24-year-old, whose birthday is this Tuesday, has featured 11 times for Munster since 2013, racking up 49 points. He scored all of Munster’s 13 points in Munster’s April defeat Leinster.

According to the Independent, Holland is likely to make a decision on his career before the end of next week.

He has been suffering on and off since his hamstring came off the bone in 2014 – and it is starting to seem like the young man will simply not be able to overcome the injury.

Though Holland has never been capped for Ireland, his talent is widely respected, having won the John McCarthy Award for Munster Academy Player of the Year in 2014.

Twitter has been abuzz with tweets about what a blow losing Holland would be to his club.

Some, however, have urged caution and hold out hope that Holland will be able to continue his career in some form.
