Sebastian Vettel claimed his third successive Formula One Driver’s title in Interlagos today, but it didn’t look good after a crash on the first corner.
After a collision with Bruno Senna on the very first lap, Vettel dropped back to last place, giving hope to Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, who needed to finish several places ahead of the German if he was to wrestle the title from his grasp.
In the end, Alonso finished second behind the McLaren of Jenson Button in what was an incident packed Brazilian Grand Prix and because of the points on offer, Alonso needed Vettel to be lower than seventh to usurp his place at the top of the driver’s standings.
Instead, Vettel staged a gutsy recovery to finish sixth and sealed his third consecutive driver’s title becoming, at 25, the youngest ever triple Formula One champion in the process.
Vettel will no doubt be a satisfied man tonight but after what happened on the opening lap he’ll be a relieved one too.
Check out how it almost went so very wrong for the champ in the video above.
