Pic: They’re even making specific Mayo GAA Arab clothing in Qatar now

Is the first ever instance of a thawb, a traditional ankle length Arab robe, made in the colours of a county GAA team?

Mayo may nor may not win their first senior All-Ireland football title in 62 years later this month but you can be damn sure that if they don’t, it certainly won’t be down to a lack of support from the county’s traditionally crazy fan base.

Such has been the effect of emigration on the county that there are now Mayo people dotted everywhere throughout the globe and it seems as if every single one of them is determined to be seen to be supporting the men in green and red wherever they have ended up.

The latest example comes from Tom Donoghue, a native of Belmullet now resident in Qatar, who was pictured wearing a very fetching thawb in the Mayo colours with Doha in the background and even included what we imagine is the Arabic translation of Mayo for Sam for good measure.

We have to say that the thawb looks very skilfully put together and if they see it, the folks at Elverys – Mayo’s official sponsor – might even bring out a special edition range in time for the final in a fortnight’s time.

Hat-tip to Colm Coyle, Fergal Quinn and Qatar GAA for sending this one into us
