Where do you stand on the great ponytail on a man debate? We look at some individuals who have dabbled in the art of tied back long hair.
David Beckham
Probably still one of the most famous people on the planet, David Beckham is viewed as a bit of a style icon and he still sets trends even after hanging up his boots. Whatever Beckham does, legions of people follow suit. There were lots of men traipsing around Madrid looking like this around 2004:
However, it was only a couple of months later when he did this to his hair and ponytail:
Verdict: Beckham is a naturally stylish man and seems to pull off whatever look he chooses to go with on any given day. He even makes the ponytail look like an inspired choice so we are saying yes to the ponytail on this occasion.
Bono
Another global superstar, our own Bono from U2 (in case you were wondering) has had a ponytail during his success-laden career. It was around the time of the release of the Joshua Tree and this is how he carried it:
He’s moved on a bit since the halcyon days of the late ’80s and ’90s and he’s gone back to a hairstyle more befitting a man of his years:
Verdict: Bono has undergone a lot of transformations during his stellar career as is the wont of a lot of these rock star types, but we definitely feel that he looks better without the ponytail. With or without the ponytail, he still writes great songs. (see what we did there? No? Okay, carry on)
Johnny Depp
The American actor is known as another trendsetter and carries off that bohemian look very well. Here he is sporting a ponytail in a scene with Juliette Binoche from the 2000 film, Chocolat:
He’s another one of those guys (like JOE) who can get away with pretty much any look due to high levels of handsomeness. As you can see below, he still manages to rock the shorter hair cut look too:
Verdict: Johnny Depp has the same affliction that JOE suffers in that we both suffer from being ridiculously good looking. It doesn’t matter if we have a pony tail or indeed an actual pony’s tail attached to our mallet, we will still look good. Undecided.
David Seaman
The former Arsenal and England goalkeeper had one of the most famous ponytails in football. He wore it with pride and in fairness, it seemed to grant him extra powers as a net minder. Look at it in all it’s glory right now:
There were no truth in the rumours however, that he negotiated a separate contract for his ponytail when he played for Arsenal. He didn’t always have the ponytail. He had to grow it first. Before it grew, here’s what he looked like:
Verdict: We’re going to be controversial here and at the risk of causing riots in Islington and beyond, we feel that David looked better without the long ponytail. Sure, it may have granted him extra goalkeeping powers, but he did look a bit ridiculous.
Colin Farrell
The man from Castleknock is another of our own global superstars and he likes to keep people guessing about his look and his hair. Another fine looking specimen he can pretty much pull off most looks. Most. Here he is with the ponytail:
Doing his best to look homeless, we’re not sure if this is a look he has managed to nail. Here he is without the ponytail:
Verdict: I think it’s fair to say that Farreller (that’s what we call him cos we’re mates) looks much better when he goes for that cool, suave, not sporting a ponytail look.
