Video: Real-life video games try to destroy Earth in the trailer for Adam Sandler’s new movie, Pixels

Can they destroy Adam Sandler too?

Conor Heneghan

The premise of this movie is so ridiculously crazy that it just might work.

Adam Sandler has been in some ridiculous movies over the years, but his latest project takes the biscuit.

Based on a short film made in 2010, Pixels documents how the characters of famous video games of the 1980s come to life and wage war with Earth, having misread the intention of a time capsule sent to space by NASA in 1982.

No. Seriously.

To counteract Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and other video game characters turned evil and dangerous, the President (Kevin James, naturally) turns to his childhood best friend (Sandler) and a host of other 1980s video game experts to fight them off and save the world while they’re at it.

Granted, the plot is so ridiculous that it’s as likely to fall on its arse as be a huge hit, but Game of Thrones stars Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean join Michelle Monaghan in a decent-looking cast and the special effects do look pretty cool.

We’ll be watching, possibly through our fingers, when Pixels is released in Irish cinemas on August 14.
