Time magazine names an Irish favourite as one of the most influential bars of all-time

Paul Moore

We thoroughly agree.

Time was founded in 1923 and since it’s launch, the magazine has managed to the acquire the world’s largest readership for a weekly news magazine. To be honest, there hasn’t been a social, political or cultural trend that the magazine hasn’t covered or reported on.

In fact, looking at various editions of Time throughout the decades, is like a history lesson where you’re privy to the key issues of the era.

It’s fair to say then that they know what they’re talking about and that they recognise greatness when they see it. With this in mind, one of the most contentious issues on JOE recently was our divisive ranking of the best chocolate bars.

Time have weighed in on this very important issue and they agree with our selection.

Chocolate

Cadbury’s may originate from Birmingham, but there’s no denying that the Irish milk that’s used in their Coolock factory is absolutely sublime.

Time agree that the Dairy Milk is king because they’ve just ranked it as one of their 13 most iconic chocolate bars of all-time.

Here’s what they had to say about it, “The Cadbury family’s idyllic factory village in Birmingham, England—where these bars were created in 1897—helped inspire Milton S. Hershey’s own facility in Pennsylvania. “It was a sort of social utopia,” explains Deborah Cadbury, a family descendant and author of Chocolate Wars. “The Cadbury brothers as Quakers were the first to really look after their employees and provide pensions and security of employment and a living wage.” Although the Cadburys no longer own the company, its influence still looms large: its Dairy Milk and 5-Star bars are some of the world’s best-selling confections.

Here are the 12 other bars that made the list;

Wonka Bar, Milky Way, Baby Ruth, Nestle Crunch, Scharffen Berger,  Grenada Chocolate, Chicken Dinner, Snickers, Nestle Milk Chocolate, Toblerone, Kit Kat and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate.

While we agree that it’s a fine list, we instantly veto the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate. It’s far too sweet.
