#TRAILERCHEST: Ben Affleck’s new film Live By Night looks like a gangster classic

Paul Moore

Affleck is a really gifted director. This looks great.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice may have taken a bit of a critical pounding, but there’s no denying  that Ben Affleck is a remarkably gifted director and the trailer for his new film, Live By Night, seems like it’s going to be another commercial and critical hit.

We absolutely love the three films that Affleck has directed so far in his career – Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo – and his new film has a real feel of The Untouchables about it.

Plus, just listen to those vocals from Hozier, perfectly suited to the gangster badassery on show.

Plot’s it all about?: Live by Night is set in the roaring 20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies.

The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck), the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw.

But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll and ultimately setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

Directed by: Ben Affleck.

Starring: Ben Affleck, Brendan Gleeson, Elle Fanning, Chris Messina , Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, Chris Cooper, Anthony Michael Hall.

Release date:  January 13, 2017.
