Netflix OR chill? Large percentage of young couples pick TV over sex at the start of relationships

Jade Hayden

TV or sex?

If the latest series of The Crown is on, the answer to the above may seem pretty obvious… (or not, depends on how into Claire Foy and/or Matt Smith you are.)

The common practice known lovingly as ‘Netflix and chill’ has been plaguing the dating and relationship scene for years now.

For a while there it seemed that you couldn’t just go over to someone’s gaf to stick on a bit of Blue Planet without somebody trying to come onto you.

As we all know though, there are plenty of scenarios where listening to David Attenborough tell you all about the struggles of the emperor penguin is totally acceptable and no other sex-based activity needs to happen.

And as it turns out, plenty of new couples actually seem to feel the same way.

According to data compiled by Mattress Online, 40 per cent of people aged between 18 and 25 choose TV over sex in the first three months of their relationship.

The study was conducted to see how long it took couples to feel comfortable enough to reveal their “true selves” to their partner.

So it makes sense then that admitting to wanting to watch a bit of telly instead of getting the ride is a key component in being totally comfortable with someone new.

After all, who’d want to miss out on the latest episode of the Great British Bake Off on a Wednesday evening?

No one. That’s who.

The study also showed that men are twice as likely to say ‘I love you’ within the first week of dating someone new.

Seems intense but okay, whatever you’re comfortable with, man.
