Be ready…

Ireland as a whole doesn’t deal with snow very well. We’re just not used to it like other countries so when it hits, it’s only natural that it affects us worse than our more efficient European neighbours like Germany, France and to a lesser extent, the UK.

Met Éireann have warned of a significant snow event which is likely to hit the country on Tuesday, and that we can expect the levels to reach 6cm in places.

While there is currently status orange and status yellow warnings in place, Met Éireann have said that it’s likely a red warning will be issued.

Snow showers will develop more readily across the east of Leinster again later in the day and will spread further across the country.

Overnight, it’s promised to be very cold with temperatures dropping to as low as minus six in some places.

The ESB have said that while they’re well equipped to deal with such an event, extreme weather such as heavy snowfalls and freezing temperatures can affect underground and overhead electricity cables and wires.

“Our emergency planning team have already put plans in to place,” the ESB said. “Additional Network Technicians and Call Centre staff [are] ready to deal with outages as they arise where safe to do so. We have also cancelled all outages for planned maintenance work.”

Councils across the country are also preparing salt and grit for the roads ahead of the upcoming cold spell.
