Jim Carrey is set to play one of video game’s all-time greatest villains

Rory Cashin

We always HATED this guy!

Jim Carrey always seems to be having way more fun when he’s playing a bad guy.

The Riddler in Batman Forever, Count Olaf in A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Hank in Me, Myself and Irene, and The Grinch in… well, The Grinch.

So we’re very happy to hear that he is lined up to play one of the best video games baddies of all time… Doctor Robotnik.

Yep, Carrey is joining the cast of the live-action/CGI hybrid movie out for Sonic The Hedgehog, and he’ll be playing the evil bald scientist who traps innocent animals and turns them into killer robots to do his bidding.

Only a certain blue speedy hedgehog and his double-tailed mate can save the day.

According to Deadline, none of the animated characters have been voice-cast yet, but James Marsden (X-Men, Westworld) and Tika Sumpter (Ride Along, Gossip Girl) have been cast in currently unspecified roles.

It is being directed by Jeff Fowler, who was Oscar-nominated for his short animation Gopher Broke, while the screenplay is being worked on by no less than three writers at the moment, including the minds behind 22 Jump Street (hooray!) and The Cloverfield Paradox (boo!).

No idea how this is gonna turn out – especially since there STILL hasn’t been a genuinely good movie based on a video game – but we’ll know for sure when Sonic The Hedgehog hits movie screens on 28 November 2019.

In the meantime, here’s a reminder of just how evil Doctor Robotnik actually was:
