After writing for shows like Raw, Being Human and London Irish, Lisa McGee found international praise and acclaim with her hit show Derry Girls.
Being a proud Derry woman herself, McGee’s account of growing up on Foyleside during the ’90s has been a massive hit with audiences and critics alike.
The adventures of Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle – and the wee English fella – have become Channel 4’s biggest new comedy for nearly five years, premiering with viewing figures of 2.79 million. It was also the most watched series in Northern Ireland since modern records began in 2002, being watched by an average of 519,000 viewers with a 64.2% share of the audience.
Aside from this, Derry Girls also won the award for best comedy at the IFTAs with McGee picking up the award for best writer in a comedy or soap. Impressive stuff.
Ok, what’s it about?
Derry, 1980. Emma and Clare are thick as thieves – skipping, chasing, playing in the park. But the terrible events of that summer would tear their lives apart, binding them together forever. As adults they obsessively replay past events and incidents. Could anything have been done to change them?
Now in their thirties, Emma and Clare struggle to come to terms with the chain of devastating events that began that summer. Hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure, Girls and Dolls was first performed by Tinderbox Theatre Company on a tour of Northern Ireland in 2006 and it won the Stewart Parker Trust Award in 2007.
The play stars Jamie Lee O’Donnell (Michelle in Derry Girls) and Jennifer Barry (Siobhan in The Young Offenders) and it will be playing in the following venues;
Dublin, Gaiety, 11-15 September
Derry, Millennium Forum, 17-20 September
Belfast, Odyssey, 25-27 September
