Aquaman VS Mary Poppins Returns VS Bumblee – which movie topped the box office this week?

Rory Cashin

box office

All three blockbusters opened in U.S. cinemas this weekend, and there was one clear winner.

When it comes to blockbusters, Hollywood usually knows to space them out.

If you pit them head-to-head, then there’s a good chance one of them is going to lose, because the other one has run away with all of the cinema-goers money.

Which is why this weekend was so interesting to watch in the States, because it wasn’t just two blockbusters heading to the big screen on the same day, but THREE.

Yep, Warner Brothers, Disney, and Paramount all dropped some of their biggest films on the year on Friday 21 December, and everyone watched closely to see which one would come out on top.

Now we’ve got the (preliminary) results, here is how to has worked out so far:

AQUAMAN

US Box Office opening weekend: $67.4 million

Worldwide Box Office (so far): $482.8 millions

Budget: $200 million (estimated)

Metacritic Score: 55% (our review)

MARY POPPINS RETURNS

US Box Office opening weekend: $22.2 million

Worldwide Box Office (so far): $51.3 million

Budget: $130 million (estimated)

Metacritic Score: 65% (our review)

BUMBLEBEE

US Box Office opening weekend: $21 million

Worldwide Box Office (so far): $52 million

Budget: $135 million

Metacritic Score: 66%

The thing is, in the States at least, the week leading up the Christmas is usually much less busy than Christmas week itself.

Plus going to the cinema on Christmas Day is actually a big deal over there (yep, their cinemas are open on Christmas Day, unlike here), so expect these numbers to jump hugely in the next few days.

But for now, Aquaman is King, but fully expect musical Mary Poppins Returns and family-friendly action movie Bumblebee to have some legs that will see them both continue to make bank well into the new year.
