Great news.
The fund to help pay for Sean Cox’s medical bills is set to receive a lucrative windfall after a match was agreed between a team of Liverpool Legends and Republic of Ireland Legends.
The game will take place at Aviva Stadium on Friday, 12 April as a collection of former ‘Pool favourites take on the boys in green.
All proceeds raised from the game will donated to the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust and full details of the squads, ticket sales and the gala dinner will be announced in due course.
As you may know, Mr Cox was badly injured before Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League game against Roma at Anfield on 24 April.
Mr Cox, from Dunboyne in Co Meath, is still recovering in hospital after he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury after being assaulted.
Sean’s wife Martina Cox, told the FAI that: “Sean has been supporting Liverpool all of his life and to have this match in Dublin in his name will be a special day. It’s going to be a very long and slow process for Sean’s recovery and I’d like to thank the overwhelming support that Liverpool fans have shown. I’d also like to thank the club, players and those former players who will be playing in the match for their continued support. We are also working with LFC on a number of other initiatives that will help to support Sean’s care in the years ahead.”
In recent weeks, Martina Cox has said that her husband “is continuing to make progress” and that he “no longer has a feeding tube so is starting to eat and drink again with the help of the wonderful nursing staff. Seán has some more words and is trying very hard to sing along to familiar songs; these are encouraging and proud steps for us all.”
Commenting about this upcoming fundraising match, Peter Moore, Chief Executive Officer at Liverpool FC, has said: “We’re all behind Sean and his family. We hope this unique Legends game in Ireland’s capital will be a huge success and help generate vital funds to support Sean’s rehabilitation. The solidarity shown from supporters throughout the world for Sean is incredible and we thank everyone for their continued support, including the Football Association of Ireland and its CEO John Delaney, in helping to arrange this game.”
There have been a number of fundraising initiatives for Sean that have taken place in recent months, including Liverpool raising €59k and a football tournament in Ratoath Harps AFC.
Seamus Coleman, Jürgen Klopp, AS Roma and a recent charity match between Dublin and Meath have also helped raise funds to help pay for Mr Cox’s medical bills.
