Not the most stable candidate for the Iron Throne.
With the army of the dead approaching the gates of Winterfell, the issue of the Iron Throne seems fairly inconsequential because as Jon Snow said “there’s only one war that matters, The Great War, and it is here”.
While the Night King may or may not actually be present at Winterfell, it’s clear that the Jon-Dany alliance are set to face their toughest challenge because if The North falls, the rest of Westeros is bound to be next.
We now know that the Night King wants Bran and given Dany’s somewhat combative reaction to the news that Jon Snow is her nephew and the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, it’s going to be very interesting to observe Daenerys’ decisions in the next few episodes.
To quote Ser Barristan Selmy’s famous line about Targaryen madness: “King Jaehaerys once told me that madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin. Every time a new Targaryen is born, he said, the gods toss the coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land”.
Viserys was cruel. Rhaegar was sound (despite the common perception). Daenerys is…to be seen.
As things stand in Game of Thrones, it’s clear that she’s frustrated by Tyrion’s failed plans while acting as Hand of the Queen, non-committal to Sansa about the future of The North, annoyed at Jon’s rightful claim to the Iron Throne, and slightly unstable.
However, as this montage illustrates, Dany’s erratic decision making isn’t something that’s new to Season 8.
When Yara Greyjoy came to Meereen to join Dany’s alliance and give her a fleet, Daenerys said that she was free to ask for the independence of the Iron Islands. In Season 7, Daenerys was insistent that Jon bend the knee and renounce his title as King in the North.
After consulting with her allies, Daenerys said that she won’t take her dragons to King’s Landing because she doesn’t want to be Queen of the ashes. Moments later, after hearing the news that Highgarden was gone, Yara and the Sand Snakes were captured, she’s contemplating flying her dragons to the capital.
Erratic, indecisive, and volatile.
All this without the mentioning the fact she ignored Tyrion’s advice and burned Dickon Tarly alive. You could understand why Randyll Tarly needed to die, he took up arms against her and defied her rule. but Tyrion’s belief that she could have sparred his son
After the Battle of Winterfell, if there’s anyone that’s left alive to contest the Iron Throne, we’ve a feeling that Daenerys isn’t going to give up her claim easily.
