Jared Leto is giving another comic book villain a go, this time as vampire Morbius

The very final shot ties it in quite nicely with the new Spider-Man movies.

People have still not QUITE gotten over Jared Leto’s rather unique portrayal of Joker in Suicide Squad, and we know that he won’t be back for this February’s Birds Of Prey (Harley Quinn has dumped him in style), and he hasn’t been announced on the cast list for 2021’s semi-sequel, semi-reboot The Suicide Squad.

Well, he hasn’t quite given up on the comic book game just yet, as the first trailer for Morbius has dropped, in which Leto plays Dr. Michael Morbius, who will be well known to anyone with a passing knowledge of some of Spider-Man’s more famous foes.

He’ll be joined on screen by Jared Harris (Chernobyl), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Tyrese Gibson (Fast & Furious), and Adria Arjona (True Detective) in telling the origin story of how the well-respected doctor goes on to become… well… a vampire.

Behind the scenes, the movie is coming from the writers of Dracula Untold and the recent update of Power Rangers, and is directed by Daniel Espinonsa (Safe House, Life), and it looks like they’ll be trying to tie it in directly with the overarching Spider-Man universe already in play at Sony, between Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home, as well as Venom (and the upcoming Venom sequel).

The last minute arrival of a prominent supporting character from that movie universe (we don’t want to spoil which one) gives a great hint at the direction they’re likely pushing the whole Spidey franchise.

Morbius flaps its way into Irish cinemas from Friday 31 July.
