WATCH: The new Resident Evil movie is a must-watch for fans of the games

Dave Hanratty

It’s time to return to Raccoon City.

It’s been while since the last major live-action Resident Evil film.

2016, to be precise, when Milla Jovovich signed off with The Final Chapter, ending a run that began all the way back in 2002.

It’s probably fair to say that the ‘Alice’ series is… alright? Maybe not all that great? Doesn’t really capture the spirit and horror of the video games?

All of the above? In any event, fans have been clamouring for a big-screen adaptation that finally does the Resi name justice.

Set for release next month, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will feature the likes of Clare Redfield (Kaya Scodelario of Skins fame), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen from Ant-Man & The Wasp), Chris Redfield (Robbie Amell), Leon Kennedy (Avan Jogia) and the notorious Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper).

Johannes Roberts is on board as director, having previously helmed the likes of 47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night and, er, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged.

Plot-wise… well, it’s a Resident Evil movie, isn’t it? Zombies, yo. Beyond that, the film really does look like it’s working overtime to convince and satisfy fans.

You’ve got glimpses of the very first zombie ever glimpsed in a Resident Evil game, a flash of what appears to be William Birkin in one of his mutated forms and a licker that looks a lot sharper than the CGI mess we saw milling around the place in 2002.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City hits Irish cinemas on Friday, 3 December.
