We drink it, we depend on it, and as an island nation, we're surrounded by it. Water is an all-encompassing force, which is why it's taking centre-stage for Science Week 2026.
In Kerry, Sink or Think: Innovation Skills for Uncharted Waters invites innovators to discover power problem-solving skills. This year's highlights in Kilkenny include a Seaweed Press Workshop with Paula Lynch and a Home Hydro Workshop with Aaron Quigley. Waterford, meanwhile, is living up to its name with water-inspired science events, including Bubbly Science with Caroline Ainslie.
Science Week 2026 is for everyone, for those who just want a taste to those who really want to dive into the depths. With hundreds of events taking place across the country, this is your chance to truly immerse yourself in all things water – figuratively speaking of course.
Ahead of this year's festivities, Dr Ruth Freeman, Director of Research for Society at Research Ireland, gave science enthusiasts and the scientifically curious a glimpse of what to expect.
"Science Week takes big scientific ideas and brings them into communities in ways that feel simple, relevant and engaging," she said. "The range of events and festivals inspired by this year’s theme does exactly that. The annual success and impact of Science Week is due to the energy and commitment of the people who bring it to life in cities, towns and villages."
You can learn more about this year's events and festivals right here.
'Water: From Molecule to Ocean' is the theme of this year's Science Week, and across the country, you'll find a whole host of events dedicated to all things uisce. From hands-on workshops to thought-provoking talks to all-out festivals, there are so many science-backed events dedicated to water about to take place. Explore the wonderful ways it sustains biodiversity, supports our health and discover how climate change alters our water systems, and how science can help us protect this vital resource.
Ready to go with the flow? Science Week 2026 runs from November 8th-15th, and this year's highlights include North Dublin Science Festival – an inaugural celebration led by DCU; Chemistry UnCORKed, led by UCC School of Chemistry; Ripple Effect – a new cross-county Science Week Festival in Leitrim & Roscommon; Finn Valley Science Festival – an inclusive, accessible and calm festival in Donegal; and Midlands Science Festival, spanning counties Laois, Longford, Offaly and Westmeath.
