JOE’s business podcast, ‘The Capital B’ is back, and this week we are joined by internet sensation and bed specialist Mattress Mick. Host Nick Webb is also joined by Marissa Carter, the founder of Cocoa Brown tanning product.
We’re sure you know all about Mattress Mick, but here’s a brief introduction in case you don’t. This is his famous rap song, ‘Back With A Bang,’ which he goes into detail about on the Podcast.

On the show, Mick, who revealed that he is known as Michael when he is not in character, told Webb about how he physically gets into the bed beside customers who are considering buying a bed.
“I will lie on the mattress with them… It creates a bit of an interest, and it creates a bit of fun in the shop. It’s something a lot of my competitors don’t do… It’s what I do, and I do it very well.”
When asked what he says when he gets into bed with the customers, Mick replied “Howiye.” Iconic.
An interesting marketing tactic, and one that is clearly working for him, as his business continues to grow. Mick also discussed the benefits of social media, and how important it is to get your name out there in today’s market.
When asked if he could have achieved what he has without social media, Mick’s answer was a resounding no. “Absolutely not. I didn’t realise how powerful social media was. I was blown away by the fact that it was so strong, and growing, and getting better.”
“I’m now giving other retailers a licence to trade as Mattress Mick.” He discussed the many benefits of this business tactic: “They just pay me what we agree… It’s also a branding exercise, because it means the Mattress Mick name is getting out all over Ireland, and it’s not costing me anything to do it. It’s a semi-guerrilla tactic I suppose.”
