‘Keep calm – it’s just a blip’: Mark Little on how Brexit has been blown out of proportion

Anna O'Rourke

“This is going to make me sound completely idiotic in front of my journo friends…”

There’s been plenty of handwringing about Brexit’s potentially catastrophic effect on business, international relations and politics – but has the risk been overstated?

Someone well-placed to speculate on all of the above is Storyful and Kinzen founder Mark Little.

The RTÉ correspondent-turned-tech entrepreneur reckons the impact won’t be as big as we fear.

“This is going to be really unpopular and make me sound completely idiotic in front of my journo friends but I’m going to say that it’s overrated,” Mark said on this week’s episode of All In, JOE’s new business show.

“I’m looking back at the history books, that’s the way I do it right now.

“The only way I can come to terms with the craziness of the world we live in is think through the prism of the history book and I have to think that compared against the Second World War, the 1916 Rising, the famine; Brexit’s going to look like a tiny little blip. Keep calm.”

But Mark is far less optimistic about Britain’s new Prime Minister.

He reckons that Boris Johnson has been underestimated up to now – and that that could be dangerous.

“I think in many ways the worst thing about Boris Johnson is that he is the king of lowered expectations,” Mark continued.

“He’s underrated. We expect him to basically fall over any moment and commit the most awful, egregious faux-pas every moment of the day. I have a fear that if he doesn’t do that every day we’ll think he’s absolutely wonderful.

“He’s underrated and that’s a bad thing.”
